SS304 vs SS201 vs SS316: Which Stainless Steel Grade for Malaysia

Two bins can look identical, cost 30% apart, and behave completely differently after eighteen months in a Malaysian washroom. The difference is the grade of steel — and it is invisible until the cheaper one starts to rust.

This guide explains what separates SS304 vs SS201 and SS316, which to specify for each part of a building, and — critically — how to check that you actually received the grade you paid for.

What Makes Stainless Steel “Stainless”

Stainless steel resists rust because chromium in the alloy reacts with oxygen to form an invisible, self-repairing passive layer across the surface. Scratch it, and the layer reforms within seconds. Therefore, the steel underneath stays protected.

However, that passive layer is not indestructible. Chlorides — from salt air, cleaning chemicals, and even sweat — break it down locally and cause pitting corrosion. Nickel and molybdenum are what strengthen the layer’s resistance to that attack. Consequently, the more nickel and molybdenum in the alloy, the harsher the environment it survives.

This is the entire basis of the grade system. Everything else follows from it.

SS201 — The Budget Grade

SS201 is a 200-series austenitic stainless steel developed during a period of high nickel prices. Manufacturers substituted manganese and nitrogen for much of the nickel, cutting cost substantially. As a result, SS201 typically contains around 4% nickel against SS304’s 8% or more.

Where it works. In dry, air-conditioned indoor environments — mall corridors, hotel lift lobbies, office floors, reception areas — SS201 performs perfectly well and looks identical to SS304. Furthermore, it is harder than SS304, so it resists denting slightly better in high-traffic public zones.

Where it fails. Put SS201 in a washroom, a commercial kitchen, or anywhere exposed to humidity and chloride-based cleaning products, and it will pit and stain — usually within twelve to twenty-four months in Malaysian conditions. Above all, it is not suitable for outdoor placement anywhere in Malaysia.

The honest position. SS201 is not a fraud grade. It is a legitimate material with a legitimate application window. The problem arises when it is supplied for applications outside that window, either through supplier ignorance or deliberate substitution.

SS304 — The Commercial Standard

SS304 is the default specification for commercial stainless steel worldwide, and for good reason. With 18% chromium and 8–10.5% nickel, it delivers strong corrosion resistance across virtually every indoor application and most sheltered outdoor ones.

Why hospitals and kitchens specify it. The surface is non-porous, which prevents bacterial colonisation in seams and joints. In addition, it tolerates the acids, alkalis, and disinfectants used in daily commercial cleaning without degrading. Therefore, food service operators and healthcare facilities specify SS304 as a hygiene requirement, not merely a durability one.

Malaysian relevance. Malaysia’s year-round humidity accelerates metal corrosion substantially faster than temperate climates. Consequently, the gap between SS201 and SS304 performance opens up much faster here than it would in Europe or North America. A grade choice that seems marginal in a specification document becomes obvious within two years on site.

SS316 — The Marine Grade

SS316 adds 2–3% molybdenum to the SS304 formula. That single addition dramatically improves resistance to chloride pitting — which is why it is the standard for marine, coastal, and chemical-processing environments.

Where it earns its cost. Coastal properties in Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu, and along the Johor and Terengganu coastlines. Swimming pool decks and spa areas, where chlorinated water is constantly airborne. Any exterior installation within roughly a kilometre of open sea.

Where it is wasted money. Indoors. An SS316 bin in an air-conditioned office lobby will outlast the building, but so would SS304 at a meaningfully lower price. Therefore, specifying SS316 as a blanket standard across a mixed portfolio is over-engineering — and any supplier who encourages it without asking about your locations is selling rather than advising.

How to Verify What You Were Actually Supplied

This section matters more than any other, because grade substitution is common and difficult to detect after installation.

The magnet test does not work — and here is why

You will frequently be told to test stainless steel with a magnet, on the basis that “real” stainless is non-magnetic. This is misleading. Both SS201 and SS304 are austenitic steels, and both are essentially non-magnetic in their annealed state. Furthermore, both become slightly magnetic after cold working — which every pressed or formed bin body has undergone.

Consequently, a magnet tells you only that the material is austenitic rather than a 400-series ferritic steel. It cannot distinguish SS201 from SS304. Any supplier who offers a magnet as proof of grade is either mistaken or hoping you are.

What actually works

  • Mill certificate. Ask for the material test certificate from the steel supplier, showing the heat number and chemical composition. Reputable suppliers produce this without hesitation.
  • XRF analyser. A handheld X-ray fluorescence gun reads alloy composition in seconds and is definitive. Testing labs across Klang Valley offer this as a paid service, and it is worth commissioning on any large order.
  • Nickel spot test kit. A chemical reagent test that indicates nickel content. Less precise than XRF but inexpensive and useful for spot-checking a delivery.
  • Salt spray testing. Laboratory accelerated corrosion testing to ASTM B117. Overkill for most procurement, but appropriate for large coastal projects.

Write it into the purchase order

The most effective protection is contractual. Specify the grade explicitly in the purchase order, require a mill certificate at delivery, and reserve the right to independent testing at the supplier’s cost if the grade is disputed. Therefore, substitution becomes a breach rather than an argument.

The Cost Question, Honestly

SS201 is genuinely cheaper — typically 20–30% below SS304 for an equivalent product, driven almost entirely by the nickel content difference. SS316 typically carries a further 25–40% premium over SS304.

However, the comparison that matters is cost over service life, not cost at purchase. A SS201 bin that pits and stains in a washroom within two years must be replaced. A SS304 bin in the same position will still look presentable after a decade. Consequently, the cheaper bin is only cheaper if it is installed where it belongs.

The sensible approach is a mixed specification: SS201 where the environment is genuinely dry, SS304 as the default everywhere else, SS316 only for coastal and pool-adjacent placement. Above all, a supplier who quotes a single grade across an entire building without asking about zones is not advising you — they are simplifying their own order processing.
